In 2014 he told Orlando Weekly "Most people think I'm either a gangster or a cop or something, but the reality is I'm a sculptor, a painter, a best-selling author, many, many things—a poet, an opera singer, but none of them is gangster… It would be nice to have my legacy more than that of just tough guy”
He received critical praise for his role in the Broadway play That Championship Season, and played the role again in the 1981 film. Other noteworthy performances during the 1980s and 1990s included "Lips Manlis" in Dick Tracy.
He was also the proud father of 3 children.
