Zodiac Constellations

Of the 88 recognized constellations, 12 of them are commonly designated as Zodac signs, also known as birth signs or sun signs.

Zodiac signs correspond to specific constellations that were named thousands of years ago, and the influence of the appearance of the stars, moon, and planets on Earthly events is known as astrology. The 12 zodiac signs are referred to as sun signs because their location overhead originally corresponded to the sun’s daytime zenith on an individual’s day of birth. These are ancient designations that we still refer to, but changes in the calendar over the centuries have made these associations between dates and the position of the sun on the celestial sphere less accurate.

These 12 constellations lie along the “ecliptic of the sun” meaning the path of the sun as it appears north or south of the sky at different times of the year. Just as most of the world can see the sun year-round, most of the world can see the zodiac constellations as well. Just as the sun sits to the south in the sky during the dark winter months, the constellations associated with winter birthdays, like Scorpius, Sagittarius and Capricornus lie further south. Constellations associated with summer birthdays, like Gemini and Cancer, are located in the northern sky.

Just as we wish upon the stars, people have looked to the skies for thousands of years in an attempt to predict the future and give insight into the present. Today, astrologers (not astronomers) and many lay people still associate certain personality traits based on the position of the sun, moon, and planets on the day of one’s birth. Many people also refer to their daily horoscope for their zodiac sign to predict their future or make sense of relationships, their careers, or other aspects of their current situation.

Almost everyone knows their birth sign, most people enjoy it when you name a star in the constellation associated with their zodiac sign. With such a vast universe overhead, it’s moving to know that someone has elected to name a star associated with something as personal as your own birthday!
