CHEERS May 20, 1993 – Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Sam Malone deliveres the last line of the series in the finale episode of Cheers. Behind him, a star certificate from International Star Registry hangs on the wall showing that a star has been named "Cheers" in honor of the show.

A Star for Cheers: Celebrating the Iconic Show’s Finale

On May 20, 1993, 42.4 million households tuned in to say goodbye to Cheers, the beloved NBC comedy that had been a Thursday night staple for 11 unforgettable seasons. Week after week, Sam Malone, Diane Chambers, Norm, Cliff, Carla, Woody, and the entire Cheers family welcomed us into their bar where “everybody knows your name.” The show was more than just entertainment—it was a comforting presence, a familiar space where humor, camaraderie, and heartfelt moments unfolded.

As devoted fans of Cheers, an employee of International Star Registry® felt compelled to offer a unique tribute to the show’s creators. On March 10, 1993, a star was officially named “Cheers” through International Star Registry and the certificate was sent to the show’s directors, James Burrows, Glen Charles, and Les Charles. Accompanying the gift was a simple, heartfelt note:

“Thank you for the many happy years. My husband and I have enjoyed spending our Thursdays with you.”

To our delight, the team behind Cheers responded with a gracious “thank you” and encouraged us to watch the final episodes. What happened next was an unexpected and unforgettable moment for International Star Registry® and fans alike.

As the series came to its poignant conclusion with the legendary episode One for the Road, millions of viewers saw something remarkable—framed and proudly displayed on the bar’s wall in the background was the official International Star Registry® certificate for “Cheers.” The very star dedicated to the show had become a part of the Cheers set, forever captured in its farewell episodes. To be included in such a historic television moment was an incredible honor.

Although the whereabouts of the framed certificate are unknown today, the star named “Cheers” continues to shine brightly in the constellation Auriga, a lasting tribute to the warmth and joy the show brought to audiences around the world. Its name is also permanently recorded in Your Place in the Cosmos Volume 4, ensuring that its legacy endures for future generations.

International Star Registry® is immensely proud to have played a small role in celebrating the legacy of Cheers. The show’s ability to bring people together—whether in a Boston bar or in living rooms across America—remains unparalleled.

To James Burrows, Glen Charles, and Les Charles: Thank you for the memories, the laughter, and for making Thursday nights something special. Cheers may have said its final goodbye on screen, but its light will never fade.
